Capital Improvements – Utility Tax
An electric and natural gas tax (Utility Tax) to fund capital improvements was approved at the July 6, 2015 Galesburg City Council meeting. The Utility Tax will generate an estimated $2,350,000 per year and went into effect on January 1, 2016.
The gas tax rate is 5% of gross receipts for most customers and for others, $0.05 per therm and 5% of any natural gas service charges. The electric tax rate is based on a tiered scale and is charged per kilowatt-hour (kwh) used, with the rate ranging from 0.61 cents per kwh to 0.305 cents per kwh.
A customer with a bungalow built in 1919 with 1,121 square foot on the first floor and 560 square foot on the second floor would pay approximately $99.90 per year for the utility tax.
