Today the department continues to serve the City of Galesburg by providing fire, emergency medical, rescue, hazardous material, risk management, and disaster response services. Our risk management program includes commercial inspections, residential rental unit inspections, public education, fire safety training, fire investigations, and juvenile firesetter intervention.
The Galesburg Fire Department employs 47 paid staff. The staff consists of 46 uniform personnel including 1 Fire Chief, 4 Battalion Chiefs, 10 Fire Captains and 31 Firefighter/EMTs. One civilian staff person provides administrative and secretarial support to the department. Firefighters respond out of 3 fire stations strategically located in the City. Live Burn Test of Residential Fire Sprinklers - Lake Storey Pavilion August 6, 2008
The Galesburg Fire Department recommends fire safety sprinklers in all residences. These videos compare the results of a bedroom fire with and without Residential Fire Sprinklers. Both are set up with ordinary bedroom furnishings and a fire lit in a corner waste basket filled with paper. In 90 seconds with no sprinkler the bedroom is fully engulfed in fire - unsurvivable with all furnishings destroyed. On the second video, with one fire sprinkler head in 20 seconds the fire is controlled giving plenty of time to escape and minimal damage to the home. "It is like having a firefighter in your house 24/7 365 days a year ready to put out a fire," says Fire Marshal Dan Foley. For more information seewww.homefiresprinkler.org .
