The Galesburg Fire Department was established as a career, paid department by City Ordinance in 1858. Today, the department continues to serve the City of Galesburg by providing fire, emergency medical, rescue, hazardous material, risk management and disaster response services. Our risk management program includes commercial inspections, public education, fire safety training, fire investigations and juvenile firesetter intervention.
Additionally, firefighters routinely provide valuable services to Galesburg citizens for unlimited scenarios that do not require a response with red lights and sirens. Examples include service calls for smoke and odor removal, assisting invalids, mitigating water leaks, carbon monoxide investigations, structual collapse, stalled elevators, flagpole repair and the occasional cat in the tree. We are proud to say it is our aerial truck that rescues a stranded Santa from a downtown rooftop every Christmas, carries our local football team at the GHS Homecoming Parade and provides an anchor for the Stars and Stripes under which our fallen military heroes return home. We are happy to help the community whereever and whenever the opportunity arises.
The Galesburg Fire Department (GFD) is a professional Fire Department serving the City of Galesburg from three stations. We are 42 sworn personnel consisting of 1 Fire Chief, 3 Shift Battalion Chiefs, 1 Fire Marshal, 1 Staff Captain, 9 Shift Captains, 27 Firefighters and a Department Secretary. Last year GFD responded to 4,289 emergency calls in the City and our surrounding mutual aid areas.
