The City of Galesburg employs approximately 230 full-time employees in seven departments:  Administration, Finance, City Clerk's Office, Planning and Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Police Department, and Fire Department. City employees provide services to the community through administrative, public safety, clerical, professional, skilled labor, and trades work.

Interviews, Background Checks and Pre-employment Examinations

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications of a position may be selected for an interview. During the interview process, certain individuals may be asked to sign a letter authorizing the Galesburg Police Department to conduct a background check. The background check is completed prior to making a job offer to an individual. All offers of employment are contingent upon the applicant's successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination that includes a drug test, and verification of prior employment and education.

Residency

All personnel hired by the City are required to obtain residency within 20 miles of City Hall no later than 13 months after their first day of employment. A residency requirement map is located on the right side of this page.

Hiring Policy

Only one person from a family (defined as a spouse, parent, stepparent, sibling, child or stepchild) may be employed by the City within the same department.
