To register to vote, a person:
    1. Must be a U.S. citizen;
    2. Must be 18 by the day of the election; and
    3. Must reside in the precinct at least 30 days.

    ID Required:

To register, a driver’s license or photo I.D., or some form of identification with a name and current address on it is required. Acceptable substitutes for a driver's license or photo I.D. are: utility bill, checking account, paycheck, etc.

    Change of Address or Name:

New residents to the City of Galesburg need to change their address. This can be done by putting the new address on the back side of their voter I.D. card where indicated and sign. This can be mailed to the Galesburg Election Commission office.

A name change requires a new registration. If the name change was more than 28 days before the election and you did not reregister, you will not be able to vote.

    Registering to Vote:

A person can register to vote at the Galesburg Board of Election Commission, City Hall, 55 West Tompkins Street. Hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. We are also required to be open four Saturdays prior to close of registration for every election 9:00 am till Noon.

Places a person can also register to vote:

  • Secretary of State’s Office
  • Department of Human Services
  • Precinct Committeemen or Deputy Registrars
  • For people who live outside of the City of Galesburg, but live in Knox County, registration can be done at the County Clerks Office, Knox County Courthouse, 200 South Cherry Street. The Court House hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Monday through Friday.

You can also register to vote by mail. Download an application here.

When registering to vote by mail, the mail-in form must be postmarked prior to the close of registration. One of the requirements for someone who registers to vote by mail is that the person must vote in person the first time they vote.

A Change in Address May Affect Eligibility to Vote:

It is very important for a person to be current on where they reside. So many people think they are registered at the current address and they find out on the day of the election (when it’s too late to do anything), that they have not changed their voter registration.

If a voter moved within 28 days of the election in the same precinct you can vote a full ballot by signing the appropriate affidavit.

If a voter moved more than 30 days before the election within municipality, and did not transfer registration, after completing the appropriate affidavit voting can only be done using a federal offices only ballot.

If you moved within 30 days before the election outside of your precinct, but you still live in the State, and did not transfer your registration, you can vote a full ballot in your old polling place after completing the appropriate affidavit.

If you moved more than 30 days before the election out of your county or municipality under the board of election commissioners and did not transfer your registration, you cannot vote.
