Location: Second Floor, City Hall,
55 West Tompkins Street
The City of Galesburg Engineering Division provides for the essential planning
and orderly construction that transforms community vision into useful public
works projects.
The City Engineer issues permits to Contractors and Citizens working upon
the City Rights-of-Way. This includes reconstruction of driveways, sidewalks
and utilities.
The Engineering Division reviews sub-division and drainage plans for compliance
with local ordinances.
The Engineering Division coordinates construction activities with Contractors,
the State Government and other entities. This includes construction of bridges,
streets, sidewalks and sewers
Streets
The Street Division is divided into two (2) sections; a Traffic Section
and a Maintenance Section.
Traffic Section
-
Traffic Signals & Lighting
The Traffic Section is responsible for the operation and maintenance of
all the traffic signals in the City, the maintenance and operation of
all the City owned street lights and electrical systems for all of the
City owned buildings as well as all City parks, baseball diamonds, pools,
tennis courts, etc.. In addition, the Traffic Section maintains the runway
lighting at the Galesburg Municipal Airport.
-
Street Signs & Pavement Markings
The Traffic Section is also responsible for the maintenance of all traffic
control signs including street name signs, stop signs, yield signs, no
parking signs, etc.. Also, the Traffic Section maintains all painted pavement
markings and striping. This includes restriping the majority of the city's
streets annually.
-
The Maintenance Section is responsible for the maintenance of approximately
170 miles of streets and 120 miles of sidewalk within the City limits
of Galesburg. This includes street maintenance and cleaning, repairs to
curbs, storm sewer and inlet maintenance, gutters and sidewalks and snow
removal operations.
-
Sweeping
From March until November, all streets with curb and gutter (approx. 120
miles) are swept a minimum of once per month. One sweeper does the bulk
of the work until mid September when a second sweeper is added to assist
with leaves. The Central Business District is swept three (3) times a
week.
-
Storm Water
The Maintenance Section is also responsible for maintaining all storm
water drainage systems such as ditches, driveway culverts, storm sewers,
inlets, and manholes. Annually, in preparation for sealcoating, ditches
are re-graded, and driveway culverts are cleaned or replaced.
-
Street & Curb Maintenance
The Maintenance Section does all the repairs to the city sidewalks, both
brick and concrete. Also street repairs and curb and gutter repairs. They
coordinate with local contractors when making repairs to residential water
and sanitary sewer and are responsible for repairing the street once the
water and/or sewer repairs are complete.
-
Forestry
In addition to the above, the Maintenance Section assists the City Arborist
with the removals of terrace trees and stumps and the trimming of trees
overhanging the street or sidewalk. The City's policy is to only remove
those trees that are dead, dying or dangerous. Much of this work is done
in the fall and winter in cooperation with utility companies that annually
trim trees, which are in conflict with their overhead lines. For any questions
or concerns you can contact the City Arborist, Gary Johnson at 345-3692
or you can call the Street Division at 345-3621 to make arrangements with
the Arborist.
-
Firewood is available to local residents in random lengths and sizes.
By calling the Street Division, 345-3621, residents' names are placed
on a "wood list". Many citizens take advantage of this program.
Tree limbs are also run through a wood chipper and these chips are available
to residents for use as mulch around trees and landscaping.
-
Snow Removal Operations
Both the Traffic Section and Maintenance Section are involved in the City's
snow removal operations. Operations include frost patrol on bridges which
begins at 4 a.m. every day for the entire winter season, salting main
streets, and snow plowing of all City streets. See SNOW REMOVAL PROCEDURES
section of this website.
