Swimming and water safety skills will be taught to swimmers of all ages and abilities in a positive aquatic environment. The program will begin developing positive attitudes, swimming skills and safe practices in, on and around the water.

Learn to Swim - Winter Session II

Learn to Swim Days and Times
Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays
Time: 5:15-6:00 p.m. or 6:00-6:45 p.m.
Preschool Times: 5:30-6:00 p.m. or 6:00-6:30 p.m.
Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.
Fee: $35.00 for Aquababies and Preschool
$37.00 for Youth – Levels I-VI
*Fees are subject to change.
 
 
REGISTRATION
Registration for Learn to Swim classes are held at Hawthorne Municipal Pool from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on designated dates in order to ensure accurate placement in the various levels. No advance registration is taken for this program due to participant placement in class levels on the last day of each session
 
LEARN TO SWIM
Swim instruction is organized to teach participants how to swim skillfully and safely.
Swimming and water safety skills will be taught to swimmers of all ages and abilities in a positive aquatic environment. The program will begin developing positive attitudes, swimming skills and safe practices in, on and around the water.
 
CLASS LEVELS and DESCRIPTIONS
Parent/Tot: Ages 6 - 36 months
Preschool: Ages 3-5 years
 
Aqua-babies (Parent / Tot)
Age: 6 months-3 years with a parent
This class is designed to familiarize young children to the water and prepare them for the Learn to Swim program. Exploration will include water entry, bubble blowing, front kick, front and back floating and underwater exploration. The primary focus is to make your child feel comfortable in the water.
 
Independent Preschool Program
Age: 3-5 year olds
Swimming readiness will be emphasized while learning and having fun in an aquatic environment. The objective is to provide a positive learning experience, while introducing children to the fundamentals of water safety and aquatic skills. Focus is on elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, gliding, underwater exploration and more. Parents are not in the water during these classes.
 
Build Skills and Confidence in Levels I-VI
Age: 6 years and up
Each level of Learn to Swim is designed to help children learn to swim and advance their skills in aquatic fundamentals, stroke development, refinement and skill proficiency. Safety skills will be introduced in conjunction with stroke techniques.
 
CLASS LEVELS and DESCRIPTIONS
Level I – Introduction to Water Skills - Participants will be oriented to the aquatic environment so they may develop a positive attitude toward swimming and water safety in and around the water. Students will practice facial submersion, floating and basic swimming and water safety skills.
 
Level II – Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Gain success with fundamental skills such as the front and back glide, treading water and swimming with a combined stroke. Recognizing a swimmer in distress and getting help will be among the safety topics.
 
Level III – Stroke Development - Build on the basics from Level II with additional instruction and practice in deeper water. Skill objectives are to teach elementary backstroke and coordinate the front crawl. Participants will be introduced to the scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks, while build upon treading water. Survival floating will be included in the safety topics.
 
Level IV – Stroke Improvement - Guided practice will enhance and improve skills to help develop more confidence in the strokes already learned. Improving strokes and increasing endurance will be the focus of this level. Back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke and butterfly are introduced, along with the basics of turning at the wall. Swimmers will build upon the sidestroke and butterfly stroke coordination. Survival swimming will be among the safety skills.
 
Level V – Stroke Refinement - Provide further coordination and refinement of strokes. Flip turns and surface dives will be introduced as swimmers prepare for competitive swimming.
 
Level VI – Swimming and Skill Proficiency - Refine all six strokes in order to swim with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level VI has "menu" options to help prepare swimmers for competitive swimming and more advanced classes such as Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training. The options are fitness swimmer, personal water safety, and fundamentals of diving.
 
PRIVATE LESSONS
Private lessons may be arranged for any skill level. This is a great way to get individualized instruction on a schedule that meets your needs. Lessons are 30 minutes long for 6 days. If you cannot attend a lesson, you must cancel at least 24 hours in advance to have a make-up day. Private lessons are set up on an individual basis.
Fee: $65.00 per person for one child or $95.00 per session for two children
