The American Red Cross released a newly revised Lifeguard Training program this past spring to reflect the most current research for preventing, preparing and responding to land and aquatic emergencies. Candidates will be trained to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations, both in and out of the water. Topics include: water rescue skills, surveillance and recognition, first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, AED and more. There will be an emphasis on objective based rescues and team response, with focus on using an AED as soon as possible. Lifeguard candidates that successfully complete the course will receive a 2 year certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED and Waterfront Skills. An add-on Waterfront module will be included for individuals that may be working in non-surf, open-water areas, such as with the City of Galesburg, Oak Run, Lake Warren, and Little John.
