    City of Galesburg seeks a progressive and committed fire professional to serve as the city's next Fire Chief

    The Galesburg Fire Department serves the city of Galesburg and select surrounding communities by providing fire, emergency medical, rescue, hazardous material, risk management, and disaster response services. The risk management program includes commercial inspections, residential rental unit inspections, public education, fire safety training, fire investigations, and juvenile fire setter intervention.

    The city of Galesburg is a full-service, rapidly evolving West Central Illinois community with significant ties to the transportation industry. Galesburg has one of the largest railroad yards in the United States, is home to 2 colleges, and as a community has much to experience in the way of unique shopping, antiques, arts, museums, historical homes and buildings, recreational areas, walking tours, and a multitude of annual events. The City operates under the Council-Manager form of government with an annual budget of $68 million and as a home rule municipality.

    The Galesburg Fire Department employs 49 paid staff, consisting of 48 uniform personnel, including 1 Fire Chief, 4 Battalion Chiefs, 11 Fire Captains, and 32 Firefighter/EMTs. Personnel respond out of 3 fire stations strategically located in the City. The GFD has a training facility which also serves as regional training center for the Illinois Fire Service Institute at the University of Illinois. The GFD operating budget for FY 2010 is $3,646,875.

    Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public/Business Administration, or related management field. Successful candidate must possess exceptional administrative, interpersonal, and managerial skills; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of firefighting; thorough knowledge of modern emergency response management practices; and a minimum of 10 years of fire service experience, including at least 5 years of progressively responsible management and supervisory experience. Additional specialized training such as the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program, or the State of Illinois Fire Officer III certification is highly desirable. Salary range is $63,208 - $80,912 DOQ, along with a full benefit package. Residency within 20 miles of Galesburg City Hall required within 13 months of hire.
