    Galesburg Fire Department

Live Sprinkler Demonstration at Galesburg's Lake Storey Pavilion

In August of 2008 area building inspectors, builders, community officials, and other interested individuals watched this live fire demonstration showing the difference in fire behavior in a typical bedroom with and without residential sprinklers. This is a dramatic demonstration of the effectiveness of residential sprinklers. All of the latest major residential building codes require sprinklers in new construction. Currently, Galesburg is on the 2006 International Residential Code which makes sprinklers optional.

The primary purpose of the Fire Department is to deliver the services necessary to minimize the loss of life and property threatened by all hazards including fire, medical and rescue emergencies, hazardous material incidents, and disaster situations in the community.

The Galesburg Fire Department will utilize a professional business like approach in protecting the citizens, property and environment. We will deliver the highest level of emergency services rapidly and in a humanitarian way, while operating within the policy guidelines set by City Council.

The Galesburg Fire Department was established as a career, paid department by City Ordinance in 1858. Today the department continues to serve the City of Galesburg by providing fire, emergency medical, rescue, hazardous material, risk management, and disaster response services. Our risk management program includes commercial inspections, residential rental unit inspections, public education, fire safety training, fire investigations, and juvenile firesetter intervention.

The Galesburg Fire Department employees 50 paid staff. The staff consists of 49 uniform personnel including 1 Fire Chief, 4 Battalion Chiefs, 7 Fire Captains and 37 Firefighter/EMTs. One civilian staff person provides administrative and secretarial support to the department. Firefighters respond out of 3 fire stations strategically located in the City. The Fire Department also has a training facility in the Hawthorne Center. This facility also serves as regional training center for the Fire Service Institute, University of Illinois. The GFD operating budget is $3,408,775.

The Galesburg Fire Department is a group of well-trained caring individuals who have a sense of pride and community spirit. Fire Department staff provides many public safety services to the Galesburg Community. The GFD is more than just a Fire Department.
