The city of Galesburg has reached out to local taxing bodies and communities within a five county area, asking them to voice their support for a Caterpillar manufacturing operation in Galesburg. Mayor Sal Garza stated today, "Our efforts to attract the Caterpillar project to Galesburg are both a local and regional effort. We have met with local taxing bodies and have communicated with our region’s elected officials, municipalities, and other key stakeholders that we will need their support to attract this world class facility to Galesburg."

City Manager Todd Thompson and the Economic Development Department are in the process of following up to secure letters of support from local and regional stakeholders. "The interest is strong," shared Thompson, "and we anticipate a very encouraging response."

Lori Sundberg, President of Carl Sandburg College, stated "We are in full support of working regionally with Galesburg and area municipalities in preparing the needed workforce for the Caterpillar project. We are poised to provide screening, recruitment, and training of the 1,000 plus jobs that would be created and drawn from the entire region."

State Representative Don Moffitt expressed satisfaction at the regional approach Galesburg is taking to this opportunity. "It shows a real understanding of what economic development looks like in the 21st Century, and it’s this kind of regional collaboration that will lead to significant job creation opportunities in the future. I think this is something we can all get behind."

Mayor Garza added, "It’s no longer city versus city, but about regions coming together and being competitive with other regions and countries world-wide. We are in this together and a strong regional approach to economic development will get us to our goals. We look forward to working with all our partners in making our region a better place to live through job creation. Our message is clear, that Galesburg and the region are open for business."

Communities and organizations wishing to provide letters of support for Galesburg, should contact Mayor Sal Garza.
