The City of Galesburg provides weekly curbside yard waste pick up through the month of November and monthly during December, January and February. Residents can bag the leaves in brown paper yard waste bags and set them out at the curb on the regular solid waste pick up day. Leaves can also be placed in a garbage can. This service requires no sticker or added fee. Sorry, but yard waste, including leaves, cannot be collected in cardboard boxes or plastic bags. Burning leaves and other yard waste is not allowed.
An alternative to raking and bagging leaves is to mulch the leaves into the grass by using a mulching lawn mower. By leaving them on the ground and mulching, valuable nutrients are added back into the soil making it healthier.
You may also use leaves as mulch and place in your flower beds around plants. Using leaves as protective mulch conserves soil moisture during dry spells and helps prevent weeds from growing.
The following articles were found on the University of Illinois Extension website and may provide you with further details on how to best dispose of your fall leaves.
