Rotary Park Improvements Breaking Ground

ROTARY PARK IMPROVEMENTS BREAKING GROUND

 Galesburg, IL (November 25, 2014)

 The Galesburg City Council is scheduled to approve bids for a project to further develop Rotary Park at their next regular meeting on December 1, 2014.  On Tuesday, December 2nd the City along with The Rotary Club of Galesburg, The Rotary Club of Galesburg Sunrise, and The Pilot Club of Galesburg will celebrate the start of construction with a Groundbreaking Ceremony at 2:00 p.m. on the north side of Rotary Park; the public is encouraged to attend. 

 The local service clubs have worked with city staff for several years, from concept through fund raising, to get to the point of awarding a construction contract for the project.  Mary Burgland, Assistant District Governor for Rotary International District 6460 and Chairperson of the Rotary Park Task Force stated:  "The Task Force is very excited about the completion of the planning and solicitation phases.  We are overwhelmed with the financial support provided by the Galesburg community and look forward to the construction of these wonderful improvements for Rotary Park."

 The City has been awarded an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to fund 50 percent of the improvements to Rotary Park. The community, through local service clubs, individuals and businesses have raised the other 50 percent of the funding.  The local fund raising effort was headed up my members of the local Rotary Clubs. 

 Improvements to the park include: splash pad water feature, walking/jogging trail, connector paths, restroom building, new/updated playground equipment, a ball field backstop, two parking lots, storm water detention pond / seasonal skating rink feature, warming shelter for skating rink and a bio swale /rain garden sustainability feature.

 The design of the project was by Mauer-Stutz Inc., the contractor anticipated to receive the bid award on December 1st is Hein Construction Company.
