2014 Fall Fire School

August 21, 2014 12:09 PM
On Saturday, August 23, 2014, the Galesburg Fire Department and Western Illinois Firefighters Association will be combining forces to sponsor the 19th Annual Fall Fire School.  The training will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the GFD’s regional training facility in the Galesburg Hawthorne Center complex.

Approximately 200 students and instructors from a 100 mile radius will spend the day learning and improving skills in a variety of classes. These include separate instruction for new and seasoned firefighters in the basic essentials and advanced levels of firefighting, automobile extrication, fire behavior, reading smoke, tactics for residential and commercial building fires, and emergency medical services. The expected high temperatures and humidity will add to the necessity for paramedics from the Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Service to provide monitoring and hydration of firefighters throughout the day as they enter live fire scenarios under heat and smoke conditions.

GFD Fire Captain Steve Selliers is again coordinating the event for 2014.  Classes are taught by state certified instructors including many from the Galesburg Fire Department. Q’s Café of Galesburg will provide lunch.  The public is invited to attend as observers.
