The City of Galesburg Recreation Division aquatic staff served as an official host site for The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Hawthorne Municipal Pool to help raise awareness that Swimming Lessons Save Lives™.  Thousands  of kids and adults at aquatic facilities around the globe united to attempt a new global record for The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL) and a chance to be counted in a new Guinness World Record™ .  The City of Galesburg and children from Creative Childhood were part of the official count in the 2012 Guinness World Record™ event, which had 24,873 participants.
It was estimated that a record 35,000 participants took part in this global event, in which a half hour swim lesson is taught simultaneously around the world, to build awareness about the vital importance of teaching children to swim to prevent drowning.  This lesson included safety skills and basic swim skills, such as blowing bubbles and floating.
Tragically, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children, ages 1-5, and the second leading cause of accidental death for children under 14 years of age.   Research shows participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children 1-4 years of age, yet many kids do not receive formal swimming or water safety training.
The City of Galesburg aquatic staff realizes the value of teaching swim lessons to children, and adults, and offers American Red Cross swim lesson year-round at Hawthorne Municipal Pool.
