Area businesses attend problem solving forum

Earlier this month, three area businesses traveled to Chicago to attend the Chicago Innovation Awards' 'Media, Capital & Strategy' Session, a program that allows emerging businesses a chance to hear how several successful entrepreneurs and innovators have overcome problems and challenges to build their businesses. Attending the session were Sudhir Seth and Serin Rao, Pennycress Energy Co.; Bob Blackburn, Blackburn Sampling, Inc.; and Tom Maleck, CrossFire LLC.
The forum was held as a result of entrepreneurs and businesses voicing a concern over the problems of customer awareness, finding capital for a business, and how to develop business strategies to grow and thrive. According to Tom Kuczmarski, co-founder of the Chicago Innovation Awards, "These are the three top concerns of the businesses we surveyed. By allowing start-ups and growing companies to hear from successful businesses that have encountered and conquered these challenges we feel we can alleviate some of the pain and actually provide solutions."
The event held at the Museum of Broadcast Communications was by over 300 individuals, and provided answers and insights in how businesses can effectively harness social media to achieve goals; how to find the right source of capital for your business; and how to develop strategies to help a business prosper and grow.
Tom Maleck, CEO CrossFire LLC, said, "The forum was great. To hear about the problems and possible solutions I am facing in growing my business from someone that has faced and conquered the same is of immense help. Not only do I uncover a potential solution, but I found it without having to waste a lot of time on trial and error or research. Very helpful."
Gary Camarano, Global Strategies Director of the EBI Network, commented, "Resources like the Chicago Innovation Awards can help our region's businesses by providing education, exposure and networking opportunities. One of our businesses picked up a prospect, and another uncovered a potential source of capital. We have to use every resource available to us, and an event like this, close to home, makes a lot of sense."
This year 13 area businesses where nominated for the 2012 Chicago Innovation Awards. Finalists for the awards will be announced in September. Camarano is cautiously optimistic about our businesses chances to become finalists, and "perhaps an award winner out of this year's nominees."
