Bunker site for Hook a Kid on Golf clinic

June 20, 2013 04:11 PM
The City of Galesburg Recreation Division, Bunker Links Golf Course and G & M Distributors were selected to host a program site for the Hook A Kid On Golf, Tee Level Clinic June 11-21, 2013.  The goal is to introduce boys and girls, who have never played golf before, to the game of golf through a five day clinic.  Golf Professionals from the area volunteered to assist with golf instruction and mentoring included Greg Merrill (Bunker Links), Rielly Parungao (Soangetaha Country Club), JR Miller and Ben Olson (Lake Bracken Country Club).  Additional college staff also assist the Golf Professionals to make this a great experience.
This Friday, June 21, 2013 the participants will have the opportunity to experience on-course play for the first time with business leaders in the community from 1:00-3:30 p.m., with an award presentation from Mr. Adam Vitale, General Manager and President of G & M Distributors, from 3:30-4:00 p.m.  G & M Distributors has supported the program to help ensure that it is a success and asset to the youth.
During the award ceremony, each child will be informed that they will get to keep a new starter set of golf clubs with a golf bag.  Other items that are also provided during the program include a Hook A Kid On Golf hat, collared polo shirt, golf balls, bag tag and a rule book.  The City of Galesburg was able to host this program, at no cost to  26 participants, thanks to being awarded a grant from the "Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois", along with a matching grant from the "United States Golf Association" Hook A Kid On Golf.  The organizations goal is to inspire youth to become involved in playing golf, while instilling values and life skills such as respect for others, following rules and proper behavior on and off the course.
Participants in the program also experience a different guest speaker each day.  This year’s speakers were D.A.R.E. Officer Cromien, who talked to the participants about staying drug and alcohol free and making good choices.  Golf Maintenance Supervisor, Matt Miles, talked about the importance of golf maintenance and taking care of the course.  Mr. Wil Azer, of Azer Clinic, will be providing a session on nutrition, stretching and fitness this Thursday, June 20, 2013.  Other topics that were discussed included the weather, hydration, sun care, golf etiquette, golf rules, integrity and being a good role model by a lifeguard, recreation intern and Golf Professionals.
