Caution: Peddlers Soliciting Energy Contracts

February 21, 2017 12:08 PM
An energy supplier has been soliciting Galesburg residences and small businesses door-to-door to sign contracts for the supply of energy. They are not a representative of the City of Galesburg or Ameren Illinois. With new laws deregulating the supply of energy, many energy providers are busy signing up customers.
Complaints have been received about the conduct of representatives of the energy supplier soliciting residents. The complaints include charges of misrepresentation, soliciting outside the approved hours and allegations of refusing to leave when instructed. Anyone having concerns about solicitors are urged to contact the Galesburg Police Department at 309/343-4181 or the City Clerk’s office at 309/345-3612.
A peddler is required to show a card provided by the City of Galesburg, which identifies them as being registered with the City to solicit door to door. This registration does not indicate they are a representative of the City or Ameren, it only indicates they have registered as a peddler to solicit door to door. Peddlers may only solicit between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. and must obey any posted sign that prohibits such activity. In addition, peddlers must respect the wishes of the occupant if directed to leave.
At the March 7, 2016 council meeting, the City Council selected Homefield Energy as the supplier for the residential and small commercial energy aggregation program at a rate of $0.05635/kwh. This agreement is effective from July 2016 through July 2018 and enrollment in this aggregation program is automatic (users only need to take action if they choose to opt out). The City does not send solicitors door to door to sign up for energy aggregation.
Other energy suppliers may solicit Galesburg residents and small commercial businesses to sign with their company. Caution is recommended, as these suppliers are not the "supplier of choice" and may not be able to provide the same rates or assurances as Homefield Energy.
No matter who supplies the electricity, Ameren remains the delivery company. All Galesburg users would continue to contact Ameren in the case of outages, services calls and emergencies.
For more information, please contact the City Clerk’s office at 309/345-3612.
