City Celebrates Arbor Day 2016

April 28, 2016 01:46 PM
The City of Galesburg and the Galesburg Tree Commission will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, April 29, 2016 by planting two trees in Standish Park Arboretum at 10:00 a.m. The first tree planted will be in honor of Dick Ralston, former Tree Commission member. City officials and Galesburg Tree Commission members will be participating in the event, and the public is invited to attend.
Galesburg citizens are also reminded that free oak trees are still available for planting on private property. The oak trees are presently 3 to 6 inches in diameter and 8 to 15 feet tall. They grow to be large, impressive trees with a broad, rounded form. At maturity these trees will be 40 to 100 feet tall and with a spread of 40 to 80 feet. Citizens will need to hire a professional tree moving company with the appropriate size tree spade in order to move the trees as the trees are too large to move by hand digging. Proper equipment is required to ensure the trees are handled in a safe and healthy manner. To reserve your free tree, call the Forestry Division at 345-3621, and give your name, phone number, address where the tree will be planted and provide the name of the tree moving company you will be using.
The City is committed to managing its public tree resources and providing for an awareness and appreciation of trees among the residents of the community. Galesburg has been recognized as a Tree City USA by The National Arbor Day Foundation for sixteen consecutive years. Arbor Day was first observed in 1872 in Nebraska with the planting of more than one million trees, and is now observed throughout the nation and the world. The last Friday in April is annually selected as Arbor Day in Illinois.
