Entrepreneurs, small businesses, and minority-owned enterprises seeking assistance to start or grow their business should attend an informational meeting on Thursday, May 16 at 6 pm at the Galesburg Community Center, 150 E Simmons Street in Galesburg.   The City of Galesburg’s Economic Development Department and the local Chapter of the NAACP are teaming up to co-sponsor this information session.  Programs offered through the Office of the Illinois Comptroller office and the city will be presented.
Adrian Madunic, Public Affairs Manager for the Comptroller’s office will present information on POWER, (Providing Opportunities for through Work and Educational Resources). Created through legislation recently signed by Governor Quinn, POWER teaches business owners about the Illinois certification and procurement process, provides counseling and guidance from leading executives, and alerts members of state contract opportunities. Additionally, Ryan Lilly, Entrepreneurship Manager for the city’s EBI Network will describe programs offered through the city.
The city’s Entrepreneurship Center Manager Ryan Lilly will share details on grants, loans, and technical assistance available for business start-up and growth.  According to Lilly, "Projects eligible for funding could include: new business creation, patenting, proto-tying, product launches, pursuing new markets, research and development, and many more."
Economic Development Director Cesar Suarez said, "We are excited to partner with the State and the NAACP to promote small business development programs to area entrepreneurs, small businesses, and minority-owned enterprises.  We hope the programs presented will serve as a catalyst for new business start-ups and growth, and we will work in providing technical assistance at every level."
The program will be presented during the NAACP’s regularly scheduled meeting at 6:00 PM Thursday, May 16.  Candy Webb, President of the NAACP’s local chapter, noted, "This event is open to everyone in the region. The NAACP is a community partner in economic development and we encourage anyone interested in finding out about what programs are available to help grow or start a business to attend. This program is about the community’s wellbeing and helping to grow a strong economic base."
