City of Galesburg offers free Oak trees to residents

March 20, 2013 11:15 AM
To prepare for the loss of many ash trees due to the infestation of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and to maintain a healthy urban forest, the city of Galesburg will give free oak trees to residents.
There are a limited number of White Oak and Swamp White Oak trees available.  The White Oak, the official State of Illinois tree, is a slow growing tree with a long life span.   The Swamp White Oak is a slightly smaller tree than the White Oak.
The oak trees are presently 3 to 5 inches in diameter and 8 to 12 feet tall.  They grow to be large, impressive trees with a broad, rounded form.  At maturity these trees will be 40 to 100 feet tall and with a spread of 40 to 80 feet.  The proper planting location is essential for a long, healthy tree life.
Citizens will need to hire a professional tree moving company with the appropriate size tree spade in order to move the trees as the trees are too large to move by hand digging. Proper equipment is required to ensure the trees are handled in a safe and healthy manner.
To reserve your free tree, call the Forestry Division at 345-3621, and give your name, phone number, address where the tree will be planted and provide the name of the tree moving company you will be using.  The address must be within the city limits of Galesburg and trees must be planted on private property. The City Arborist will coordinate the move with the professional tree moving company.
The tree moving company must call J.U.L.I.E. at 1-800-892-0123 and provide the proposed tree planting site so all underground utilities can be properly located.  This must be done a minimum of 48 hours prior to moving the tree.
To reserve your free tree or for answers to questions about this free tree give-away program, call the City Arborist at 345-3621.
