The projects combine functions to achieve greater efficiencies and improved access to resources.
Roy A. Parkin, Director of Community Development said, "The Amtrak Station enhancements benefit both Amtrak and Burlington Trailways, while creating a much brighter and more pleasant experience for tourists and business travelers alike. As a transportation hub, the new Transit Maintenance Facility brings Galesburg Transit and Galesburg Handivan a spacious and efficient location for upkeep and storage of vehicles."
Construction of the Transit Maintenance Facility began last November, and the Amtrak Station renovation began this spring. The projects were coordinated by the City of Galesburg and funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Legat Architects designed both projects. Hein Construction completed the Amtrak Station renovation and Laverdiere Construction built the Transit Maintenance Facility. The Legat design team integrated sustainable strategies into the projects. Examples include high-efficiency walls, LED lighting, and energy-efficient HVAC systems.
