Emerald Ash Borer
A community tree planting event is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the city's tree nursery at Hawthorne Centre, next to the water tower. More than 58 trees will be planted in the tree nursery during this event. The public is invited assist in planting these trees and local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops are expected to participate.
The city has received a $3,000 grant from the Trees Forever organization ( to purchase trees for planting on public property. The grant is for educational outreach and tree planting in preparation for the Emerald Ash Borer. The Galesburg Tree Commission has been named the Steering Committee for this project and city Arborist, Gary Johnson is leading the effort to select tree species and planting locations that will best address the potential loss of ash trees due to the evasive Emerald Ash Borer. The Borer was recently discovered about 25 miles from Galesburg in rural Stark County near Toulon.
The nursery was established in 2006 and currently has a variety of trees available for the city to replace dead or dying trees located on public property. The trees made available through the grant are between 4 and 8 ft tall and come in 7 to 15 gallon containers and will remain in the nursery until planted over the next 1 to 5 years.
Currently underway is the moving and planting of 25 trees from the city's existing tree nursery at Hawthorne Center to make room for new trees purchased with the grant funds. These 25 trees are being planted in 13 different parks and on other public property throughout Galesburg.
