Department of Parks and Recreation Established

Galesburg, IL (February 3, 2015) The City Council, at its February 2nd meeting approved an ordinance establishing the Department of Parks and Recreation. The new department is a special revenue fund within the City’s 2015 budget. The previously separated Park and Recreation Divisions are combined to create the new department. The department includes the following divisions: Bunker Links golf course, Allison campground, Lake Storey beach, the Pavilion, Lakeside Recreation Center, Lakeside Water Park, Hawthorne Municipal Pool, Hawthorne Gym, Linwood Cemetery, the Municipal Airport, the Forestry Division, recreation special programs, park & rec administration, buildings & grounds and park maintenance. The goal of the new department is to improve the quality of life in Galesburg by providing quality programs, services and facilities to the many park and recreation customers in Galesburg. This organizational change was made to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Public Works, Community Development, and Parks & Recreation. City Engineer Wayne Carl is now the new Director of Public Works / City Engineer, which includes the Engineering Division, Street Division, Water Division and Central Garage. This change was made using existing revenues, and no increase in total personnel count.
