East Main Street Underpass Groundbreaking

August 10, 2016 04:13 PM
The City of Galesburg in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation and BNSF will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the East Main Street Underpass project at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 19th at the northwest corner of Main and Sumner.
The East Main Street underpass is a component of a larger infrastructure improvement project in Galesburg, including the West Main Street overpass completed in 2012, and the Bickerdyke Bridge over North Seminary-Kellogg, which opened in 2014. The completion of the East Main Street underpass is the third component of the multi-part plan, and will provide for enhanced traffic flow, with reduced congestion related to the large amount of train-based commerce moving through Galesburg.
The infrastructure improvements in Galesburg have been made possible through public and private sector collaboration. The combined investment for all three projects is approximately $58 million from various sources, including Federal, State, BNSF, and local sources – with the majority of the funds coming from the state’s capital construction program. Work on the East Main Street project is expected to begin this fall, with an anticipated completion date of fall of 2018.
"It is important to recognize the efforts of the many individuals and entities that made this project possible," said Mayor John Pritchard. "Governor Bruce Rauner, Secretary of Transportation Randy Blankenhorn, Deputy Secretary Omer Osman, IDOT Region 3 Engineer Kensil Garnett, Representative Don Moffitt, BNSF Railway, and Hanson Professional Services, Inc., and City staff have all made this project a reality."
Construction of the project brings with it, a $17.5 million construction contract and approximately 200 construction related jobs.  At the recent bid opening, held on July 29, 2016 at the IDOT office in Springfield, Lunda Construction, Inc. from Black River Falls, Wisconsin was the apparent low bidder.
"The East Main Street underpass provides a valuable and needed investment in Galesburg’s infrastructure, and the jobs created by the project spur the local economy," stated Todd Thompson, City Manager.  "It’s a positive impact for our community, residents, and economic climate."
Representatives from the Illinois Department of Transportation, BNSF, and the State Legislature will be present to make remarks at the groundbreaking, marking the addition of this important railroad underpass. The public is invited to join local and state officials at the groundbreaking celebration.
