"The Excellence in Economic Development Awards recognize City of Galesburg - EBI Network and the Sustainable Business Center in Economic Development as being one of the leading organizations in the industry for innovation, creativity and successful strategies," said IEDC chair, Paul Krutko. "These awards are meant to honor the organizations and individuals who are dedicated to making a positive change in their communities. This organization uses creative solutions and inventive ideas, and offers other regions a wonderful example to learn and benefit from. The award represents an acknowledgment and appreciation for City of Galesburg - EBI Network in Economic Development’s dedication to continuous growth within itself, as well as improving the industry overall."
The International Economic Development Council is the world’s largest membership organization serving the economic development profession. From public to private, rural to urban, and local to international, its members represent the entire range of economic development experience. With over 4500 members worldwide, the IEDC is dedicated to helping economic developers do their job more effectively and raising the profile of the profession. When the IEDC succeeds, its members create more high-quality jobs, develop more vibrant communities, and generally improve the quality of life in their regions.
Cesar Suarez, Galesburg’s Economic Development Director said, "Winning these awards is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and our partners. I am proud of the work they’ve done and what they’ve accomplished. Two gold awards and a silver award is quite an accomplishment for a small, rural city." Suarez explained that the IEDC received 579 nominations and presented awards in 25 categories. The organizations represented by the winners included international, state, municipal, private and public entities.
Gary Camarano, Global Strategies Director for Galesburg Economic Development Department added, "We’ve been active in getting opportunities from abroad in front of our regional partners, and we’ve started to see results from them. Some of our businesses are selling more abroad and they are also involving our local businesses in their supply chain. The direct and indirect benefits of increased exports are starting to show. I expect more good news to come from our response to globalization, and will continue to identify and bring opportunities to our region." Camarano further commented that Galesburg’s globalization response included organizing and conducting inbound and outbound trade missions, business forums, supply chain matchmaking workshops, and providing businesses with information on international opportunities and programs.
Kristy Howell, the Sustainable Business Center’s new Sustainability Director, accepted the Silver Award for Sustainability and Green Development. Ms. Howell said, "I am happy to part of the Sustainable Business Center. There has been a lot of good work done here, and I look forward to continuing it. The IEDC’s Silver Award raised the bar on our expectations here, and I am confident that the SBC staff and our partners in the region will continue to make progress in helping build green, sustainable businesses here." The SBC currently has five tenants with additional potential tenants currently being interviewed.
City Manager Todd Thompson, upon learning of the awards said, "We’re proud that our economic development efforts were recognized for excellence by IEDC. The work we accomplished together with our partners is commendable and well deserved".
