Fall Clean Up Days going on right now!

September 17, 2012 04:52 PM
Clean Up Days is going on now through the end of the week. During this time period there is no limit on size or quantity of household refuse placed at the curb; however, yard waste must still be prepared correctly and placed in a separate pile at the curb. Be sure to have items at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on your regular refuse pick up day.
Clean Up Days does not include: liquid paint, propane tanks from gas grills, concrete chunks, large auto parts, automotive batteries, used motor oil and tires. Also, certain electronic devices such as computer equipment, televisions, FAX machines, DVD player/recorders, VCRs, video game consoles, iPods/portable digital music players, digitalconverter boxes, and cable/satellite receivers will not be accepted.
Here are some suggestions for disposal/recycling some of the items not collected at the curb:
  • liquid paint -- can be taken to the Walmart paint drop-off operated the third Saturday of the month from 8 am to noon, May through October.
  • propane tanks -- contact Ferrellgas, 343-3145, or other local retailers that will charge a fee if you need to dispose of propane tanks from gas grills.
  • concrete chunks -- can be taken to the Knox County Landfill
  • large auto parts -- can be taken to the Knox County Landfill if the fluids have been removed. Auto recyclers would also take the large auto parts.
  • automotive batteries --  may be returned to places that sell automotive batteries.
  • used motor oil --  is accepted at no charge at Galesburg Transit, 567 South Farnham. Several automotive places in Galesburg also accept used motor oil.
  • tires -- for a fee can be taken to automotive places.
  • electronic items  -- can be recycled at Galesburg Transit on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The purpose of Clean Up Days is to provide an opportunity for residents to remove appliances, furniture, etc. but not entire contents from homes or garages. Also, bag and bundle as much as possible. Loose refuse at the curb may not be picked up.
