Galesburg hosts a household hazardous waste disposal event

June 18, 2013 11:49 AM
Illinois residents have an opportunity to dispose of hazardous waste – the kind that accumulates in the back of cupboards and sheds, in a safe and responsible manner. A free household hazardous waste event will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the Galesburg High School Parking lot from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. The event is sponsored by the city of Galesburg and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) and is open to anyone residing in Illinois.
Homeowners are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to safely dispose of waste that has accumulated at their home. Hazardous waste should not be disposed of in any landfill system and events such as this are an easy opportunity to divert harmful products from the environment. Types of waste that will be accepted at the event include oil-based paints, household batteries, cell phones, used motor oil, paint thinners, drain cleaners, herbicides, lawn chemicals, fluorescent lamp bulbs, solvents, pesticides, antifreeze, old gasoline, hobby chemicals, lead acid batteries, pool chemicals, propane tanks grill sized or smaller, fire extinguishers, cleaning products, old medicines (liquid or pill form), aerosol paints/pesticides and insecticides.  These products should be kept in original containers and participants are asked to remain in their vehicles while trained technicians and chemists unload the waste from each vehicle for processing.
Unfortunately, not all harmful waste can be accepted for disposal. Products that are unacceptable include business and commercial sector wastes, institutional and agricultural wastes, smoke detectors, ammunition, electronics, explosives, fireworks, farm machinery oil, biological and medical wastes, sharps/hypodermic needles, and controlled substances. Latex paint is not considered hazardous and can be disposed of with regular household refuse after it has been dried or absorbed. Usable latex paint can also be brought to a paint recycling drop off at Walmart on the third Saturday of the month, through October. The hours for this paint recycling drop off are 8 a.m. to noon.
