Galesburg Police arrested six drunk drivers during the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign

Galesburg, IL (September 11, 2015) From August 24-September 7, the Galesburg Police participated in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over drunk driving enforcement campaign, showing zero tolerance for impaired driving and arresting offenders for driving while impaired. The local effort was part of a nationwide campaign in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
During the campaign, The Galesburg Police ramped up enforcement efforts. Fifteen saturation patrols were conducted, resulting in 15 arrests and a total of 86 citations. Six drunk drivers were arrested, and four seat belt citations were issued. By removing six drunk drivers from local roads, there’s no telling how many lives were saved.
"The way we see it, if we saved one life, the campaign was worthwhile," said Lt. Russell Idle.
The high-visibility Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign aimed to increase awareness about the dangers of drunk and drugged driving, through the strict, no-nonsense enforcement of drunk driving laws. Anyone caught driving drunk was arrested; the Galesburg Police didn’t accept any excuses. The other equally important part of the crackdown was TV, radio and social media. It was hard to avoid the message.
Lt. Russell Idle shared that planning ahead is the key to preventing drunk driving. "This year, we really pushed the message about designating a sober driver," he said.  "If everyone planned ahead, we’d have a lot fewer fatalities on our hands."
The recent law enforcement crackdown was coordinated by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaigns.
