Galesburg, IL (February 4, 2014) -   The City of Galesburg has organized a Railroad Trade Mission to the Sultanate of Oman for February 23 – 27, 2014. The trade mission will bring several businesses from the Illinois Railroad Industry Cluster to Oman to meet with Government Ministries and businesses involved in the 4,000 km Oman Rail Project. The project is part of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s 40,000 km rail project designed to link Kuwait with Oman, and eventually the Mideast with the "Silk Road Trade Route" countries and Europe, and West Africa and Southern Asia shipping.

West Central Illinois businesses Koppers, Astec Mobile Screens, and National Railway Equipment will join other Illinois Railroad businesses on the trade mission, and will participate in business matchmaking appointments arranged by the U.S. Commercial Services. Gary Camarano, Global Strategies Director for the City of Galesburg stated, "The Trade Mission gives our businesses the opportunity to meet with serious buyers involved in a very large and important railroad project in the Mideast. We were at a meeting last year when Oman presented information on the project, and it appears to be the type of business the Galesburg/West Central Illinois Region is very suited for - not only for the direct exporters, but for indirect involvement with supply chain participants that can make parts that go into final export product."

The City plans Supply Chain Matchmaking Workshops between the trade mission participants and local manufacturers and vendors to create opportunities for businesses in the region. Camarano explains, "If you sell a locomotive that’s great - you’re exporting, that’s good for the local economy. But if you can include other area businesses in your supply chain, that’s even better for the local economy.  And we will do everything we can to bring opportunities to all of the appropriate businesses in the region – metal fabricators, precision part manufacturers, logistics, stamping, casting, etc."

Oman is a stable country in the Mideast, located on the Saudi Arabian Peninsula. They have been active in trade and logistics for centuries, and are one of twelve nations that have had 6% GDP growth for 25 consecutive years. While in Oman the Trade Mission will meet with the U.S Ambassador, Greta Holtz, Minister of Commerce, Dr. Ali binMassoud, Oman Rail Project Manager Abdul Rahman, and a number of high ranking government officials and businesses leaders.

Gary Taylor, Director of International Sales for Astec Mobile Screens said, "This will be a great opportunity for our company. We can provide all things needed Oman’s ballast stone, sand and stone for concrete plants, and possibly even the concrete plants themselves. This is a great opportunity!" Astec has agreed to participate in the City’s Supply Chain Matchmaking Workshops as well as in trade mission.
