GHS students participate in City Government Day

April 24, 2012 01:38 PM
Fifty-three GHS freshmen spent the day at city hall.  This is the 22nd year for this event which augments the students’ study of local government.

The day began with talks from various city officials.  Mayor Sal Garza, City Clerk Kelli Bennewitz, Todd Thompson, City Manager, and Roy Parkin, Director of Community Development spoke a little bit about their duties and functions. All students were given tours of the public safety building and City Hall before going to lunch. The luncheon speaker was Judy Minor, from Cottage Hospital’s volunteer services.  Then students spent one hour shadowing various city of Galesburg staff.  The day ended with certificates of participation given by Mayor Garza.
GHS freshman Amanda Smith had some things to say about community service.  She volunteers her time as a g-force volleyball coach for fifth graders.  She said, “I learned today that volunteering creates a stronger community” and hopes that by teaching teamwork, compromise, and good sportsmanship she can help to create better citizens.

The students look forward to this annual event and appreciate the time and effort given by all the sponsoring organizations.
