GFD EXPLORER POST 1858
In 2023, GFD initiated a Fire Explorer Program for area youth. This is the only Explorer program between the Quad Cities area and Peoria.
The Galesburg Explorer Program provides a unique opportunity for young individuals to learn about the fire service and provide mentorship. This is a great way to discover if firefighting is something they would like to pursue for a career, for a volunteer fire department, and/or as a segue to emergency medical services, all while building life skills.
Explorers receive training in both the classroom and on the fire training grounds. The program is designed to encourage safety, accountability, communication, teamwork, fitness and the development of leadership skills. Explorers will learn life skills that will benefit not only in the fire service, but in all future endeavors. Anyone eligible may join at any time throughout the year. We have some members that are brand new to the fire service and we have some that are more experienced. We learn and train as a team.
The Galesburg Fire Explorer Post 1858 meets once a month, meeting dates are set 3 months in advance. Meetings take place on weekday evenings. All instructors for Post 1858 explorer program are Galesburg Firefighters. This program is overseen by the Boy Scout of America ILLOWA Council. To maintain a safe learning environment anyone over 18 years of age must complete youth protection training.
