HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN INSPECTION
PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: Annual maintenance should be performed by a qualified contractor for most fire extinguishers. The fire extinguishers in your business should have a tag indicating the date of service and who performed the work.
EXIT SIGNS AND EMERGENCY LIGHTING: Most devices have a battery back-up that in the event of a power outage, will illuminate to allow for safe exiting. You should check these batteries periodically by pressing the “test” button.
FIRE ALARM AND FIRE SPRINKLER TEST DOCUMENTS: Fire alarms and fire sprinkler systems require periodic testing. Make sure updated testing, inspection and maintenance documents are available for review.
ACCESS TO FIRE EQUIPMENT AND FIRE SPRINKLER EQUIPMENT: Rooms that house this equipment should be properly identified and accessible. There should be no obstructions to gain access to this equipment.
KNOXBOX RAPID ENTERY KEY BOXES: If you change the locks to your building make sure the key(s) are available for the GFD member performing the inspection to place in your Knox Box. Please schedule an appointment if your door locks have changed or you need to update any contact information. For more information regarding Knox Box.
FURNACES / WATER HEATERS / ELECTRICAL PANELS: It is required to keep a minimum clearance from this equipment to access it, and to minimize the potential of combustibles being too close. These areas should never be used for storage.
ADDITIONAL BEST PRACTICES:
- Use extension cords only as a temporary means of supplying electricity
- Use approved smoking receptacles
- Keep exit hallways free of clutter
- Use of portable heating devices should follow manufacturers instructions.
- Always make sure there is an updated key in the Knox Box.
