Accident Response Team

The Galesburg Police Department has an accident response team. This team is compromised of officers that have received extensive training in the areas of vehicle crash investigation and reconstruction. These officers respond in cases of serious crashes involving injury and extensive property damage.

Bicycle Team

The Galesburg Police Department has a bicycle team. This team consists of officers who have received 40 hours of training in the proper operation and tactics of bicycle patrol. Bike patrol officers are used for many purposes. Bike officers conduct special details involving large numbers of citizens. This allows officers to navigate into areas where conventional patrol with patrol vehicles is not possible. The bike patrol also gives officers the ability to interact with the public in a way that cannot be done from a vehicle.

Officer with K9Canine Team

The Galesburg Police Department currently has two K9 officers assigned to the Canine team. These K9 teams can perform many functions useful to the police mission. Our K9 officers are full service police dogs trained in drug detection, tracking, controlled aggression, building searches, and article recovery. The K9 teams also conduct school searches and other public service functions.

Special Response Team (SRT)

The Galesburg Police Department maintains a twenty-two man Special Response Team (SRT) supervised by a Team Commander, Assistant Team Commander and two Team Leaders.

History has proven that the presence of a highly skilled and trained special response team substantially reduces the risk of injury or death to citizens, police officers and suspects. A specially trained and equipped response team can provide an essential tool for the resolution of many types of critical incidents.

Currently the Galesburg Police Department SRT trains a minimum of 48 hours per year on the following topics:

  • Advanced Firearms Training (Pistol & Rifle)
  • High Risk Search Warrant Execution
  • Meth Certified / Lab Dismantling
  • Dynamic and Covert Clearing Techniques
  • Close Quarter Battle Training
  • Mechanical Breaching
  • Vehicle Takedowns / Extractions
  • Suspect Apprehension and Control
  • Downed Officer Rescue
  • Barricade / Hostage Rescue Response
  • Active Shooter / Acts of Violence Response
  • Emergency First Aid / Officer Self Aid Medical

All team members go through a selection process prior to becoming a team member. All team members are required to maintain a specific level of fitness and pass an annual physical agility test.

The Galesburg Police Department SRT has been involved in the execution of numerous high risk narcotic and felony apprehension search warrants. The team has worked with outside agencies to include the Knox County Sheriff's Department, Illinois State Police, D.E.A., U.S Marshall Service and the F.B.I.
