Street Division
The Street Division maintains all bridges, terraces, rights-of-way, streets, alleys, and sidewalks within the city limits. The division patches, replaces, resurfaces, and sweeps the many miles of city streets, removes snow and ice from streets and maintains and adds new inlets as needed to existing storm drain systems.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Repairs streets, curbs, sidewalks, bridges, ditches and storm drains
- Reduces storm water pollution and improves storm water drainage by operating one Street Sweeper from spring through summer and two Street Sweepers in the fall. Residential streets with curbs are swept at least once per month in the summer and as-needed throughout the Fall
- Plows and salts city streets during winter
Brick Street Classification:
To preserve the historic character of the City of Galesburg the City Council in cooperation with the City Landmark Commission developed a Brick Street Policy to designate certain brick streets in the City protected or unprotected from overlay.
State Maintained Roads:
- Interstate 74
- US Highway 34 from the County Line to City Limits at Knox Highway 9
- All of North Henderson Street, All of Grand Avenue and Main Street between Henderson Street and Grand Avenue (US Highway 150)
- West Main Street west of US Highway 34 (Illinois Highway 164)
- All of South Linwood Road and West Main Street to US Highway 34 (Illinois Highway 41)
Knox County Maintained Roads:
- North, South and West Lake Storey Roads
- North Seminary Street from Sandburg Drive to north City Limits
- East Fremont Street from east of Nelson Avenue to east City Limits
- South Farnham Street south of East Fifth Street
- Thirlwell Road (Knox Highway 10)
Traffic Division
The Traffic Division is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all traffic signals, all city-owned streetlights and maintenance of other city electrical systems, which include baseball diamonds, park lighting, tennis court lighting, ornamental lights in residential areas, all airport lighting and maintenance of the electrical systems in all city-owned buildings.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Maintains decorative lighting on streets, City parking lot lights, parks and airport lighting
- Maintains traffic signals, signage and pavement markings on all streets and at the airport
- Plows and salts city streets in the wintertime
