May 1, 2013 02:53 PM
The Galesburg Police Department wishes to remind citizens to protect property in their vehicle by following a few simple rules.
With warmer weather the number of car burglaries increase. There are simple steps you can take to protect your property.
1. Lock the doors! During 2012, 185 vehicles burglaries were reported in Galesburg. Of the 185 cars entered 82% were left unlocked. Burglars look for easy targets and rarely go to the trouble of forcibly entering a vehicle.
2. Keep valuables out of sight. Burglars look for valuables; protect valuable items by locking the cars doors and removing or keeping valuables out of sight.
3. Park in well lit area. Park near a streetlight or well-lit driveway
4. Activate the car alarm.
5. Report. If you observe suspicious persons or behavior, call 9-1-1 and report it.
