Hook A Kid On Golf program introduces youth to the sport

Twenty-eight youth who are new to the game of golf will be wrapping up their Hook A Kid On Golf, Tee Level Clinic with course play paired with local community business leaders on Friday, June 22, 2012. For the fourth consecutive year, the city's Recreation Division, Bunker Links Golf Course and G&M Distributors was selected for this national program through a grant funded by the Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois and the United States Golf Association "Hook a Kid on Golf" program. Area golf professionals from Bunker Links, Soangetaha Country Club, Lake Bracken Country Club and Oak Run volunteered to assist with golf instruction and mentoring during the clinic.
The goal of the program is to inspire youth to become involved in the game of golf, while instilling values and life skills such as respect for others, following rules and proper behavior on and off the course. An award ceremony for the participants will take place following the on-course play this Friday. A different guest speaker each day of the clinic provided instruction and leadership motivation. Topics ranged from drug abuse resistance, nutrition, fitness, health, weather, integrity, golf course maintenance, golf etiquette and rules, and the importance of being a good role model.
"The city of Galesburg is fortunate to have been awarded a Hook A Kid On Golf grant for the past four years," remarked Elizabeth Varner, Recreation Supervisor.  "I am very impressed with the organization and the quality of the curriculum they provide.  The entire program is based on the graciousness of golf professionals, speakers and individuals in the community who give their time, enthusiasm and skills.   It's very rewarding to see the kids who become inspired as they learn life skills that go hand in hand with golf.  It is our hope they will be 'hooked' on golf while learning life values."

As part of the program, each child receives a starter set of golf clubs with a bag, golf balls, bag tag, Hook A Kid On Golf hat, collared polo shirt and an official rulebook.
