House fire at 1145 East South Street

June 23, 2016 03:50 PM
Fire officials have determined the cause of the fatal house fire Wednesday morning at 1145 East South Street in Galesburg to be lightning. The fire claimed the life of 76 year old Ola M. Cunningham, the home’s owner. Members of the Galesburg Fire Investigation Team from the fire and police departments, along with the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal spent most of the day yesterday examining the scene to determine the cause of the fire. A large thunderstorm hit Galesburg early Wednesday morning. Reports generated by the National Lightning Detection Network along with visual confirmation show that a large tree adjacent to the home was struck by lightning causing a fire to start in the basement of the home. Given the age of the structure and construction type, it is likely that smoke and flames rapidly spread from the basement throughout the home. The house is likely a total loss.
