Household Hazardous Waste Collection

April 21, 2014 08:54 AM
The Illinois EPA coordinates one-day household hazardous waste collections each year in the spring and fall. The first of these collections began in November 1989. Since then, 401,350 households have participated in 449 events, with more than 78,100 drums of material collected.
The City of Galesburg receives phone calls from residents requesting information on one day collection locations near Galesburg.  On June 7, 2014, there will be a household hazardous waste collection event in Lewistown, Illinois.  It will be held at the Fulton County FS, 13104 N. US 24 Highway.  The event’s sponsors include the Fulton County Farm Bureau and the Fulton County FS.  The free event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine.
Items should be kept in their original containers. Participants are requested to remain in their vehicles while trained technicians and chemists will unload the waste from each vehicle for processing.
Residents may also take their household hazardous waste to one of four permanent household hazardous waste collection facilities in Illinois located in Naperville, Rockford, City of Chicago and Lake County.  Please visit the IEPA’s website for more information about their programs.
