Lake Storey bike path grant effort unsuccessful

The city received notification this week that it was not selected to receive state funding through an Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) grant. The grant was to assist in the construction of a bike path along South Lake Storey Road from the main entrance of Carl Sandburg College to the new Villas at Carl Sandburg located at the northwest corner of Henderson Street and South Lake Storey Road.
Governor Pat Quinn and Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider announced on Wednesday the 54 projects chosen to receive a portion of a nearly $50 million investment in community transportation projects to be constructed throughout Illinois. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) received 328 applications requesting ITEP federal funding totally nearly $327 million. Beginning this year, IDOT will move this program to be awarded annually instead of every two years
In May of 2012, City Council approved a funding resolution for the grant application which pledged as its share a 20 percent contribution, or $285,000, of the total projected cost of $1,142,069.
Mayor Sal Garza said "This is unfortunate news however I intend to revisit the Bike Path Extension Project with the City Council." Garza wants to gage Council's interest on whether to continue to seek funding for this project and/or to submit application for other eligible projects for ITEP consideration.
The ITEP program is a federally-funded, competitive program that encourages transportation-related projects in a variety of categories. It provides funding for community based projects that expand travel choices and enhance the transportation experience by improving the cultural, historic, aesthetic and environmental aspects of our transportation infrastructure. The city, as project sponsor, would have received up to 80 percent reimbursement.
