Lincoln Park gazebo opens with a celebration

June 25, 2013 01:34 PM
The city is hosting a community event to celebrate the opening of the new Lincoln Park gazebo. A grand opening celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. and will include music and ice cream. The gazebo has long been a popular venue for concerts, speeches, rallies, weddings and picnics. The new gazebo can be reserved for a small fee by calling the Galesburg Recreation Division at 309/345-3683.
In the fall of 2010, it was discovered the floor was failing making it unsafe for use. The 1925 structure was demolished in August of 2012 after it was determined costs to repair were high enough to make new construction more cost effective. The approximate total cost for the gazebo was $85,000. This amount includes demolition costs, landfill fees, architectural design, construction material, sidewalks, relocation of the electrical service and landscaping. All construction labor was donated by off-duty Galesburg firefighters and other citizens under the direction of Fire Chief Tom Simkins, who acted as Site Foreman. City park and street crews provided the necessary labor for concrete work and landscaping. The donated labor has a value of between $15,000 and $20,000.
The new gazebo has the same footprint as the original structure although the floor height has been lowered and the basement restroom areas have been filled. A new feature added is an accessible ramp, constructed on the east side with a sidewalk leading to the roadway. Care was taken to mimic the former structure and preserve the historic features of the old gazebo as much as possible. Bricks harvested from the demolition were used as a foundation veneer and the columns are fluted in much the same way as the former gazebo.
