Elizabeth Runbom and Robin Oudyn
Elizabeth Runbom was one of 12 individuals selected in Illinois to attend the "9th Annual Thinking Outside the Tee Box" golf outing on Saturday, September 15, 2012 in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Elizabeth Varner, city of Galesburg Recreation Supervisor and a site coordinator for the Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois, nominated Runbom for this award. Runbom participated in the "Hook a Kid on Golf Green Level Training" this past summer with the city of Galesburg and G & M Distributors. "Elizabeth stood out during this year's 'Hook a Kid on Golf' event with her respect toward others. She is well deserving of this opportunity and I was very happy to hear she was selected," stated Varner.
The Kids Golf Foundation of Illinois hosted the event at Rich Harvest Farms. This event pairs a junior golfer with a business professional who works in a career field in which the junior golfer is interested for a nine hole scramble and mentoring activity. Runbom's Business Professional was Ms. Robin Oudyn, a high school chemistry teacher. Runbom and Oudyn had opportunity to talk about how the sport of golf teaches valuable life skills which can enhance future careers. Runbom and Oudyn rotated through activity stations such as putting, stretching, chipping and full-swing with golf fundamentals and life lessons taught at each station. The Foundation believes these connections are important to illustrate how golf can be linked to life and that all experiences have the potential to teach something. The junior golfers were challenged to reflect on what they learned at the end of the day. Each participant also received a welcome bag containing a career handbook, mentor booklet, a pink fleece jacket and a polo shirt.
The city of Galesburg Recreation Division, Bunker Links and G & M Distributors believe the Kids Golf Foundation program teaches life values through the sport of golf. Varner and Bunker Links Golf Pro Greg Merrill agree this program has already touched the lives of many Galesburg youth.
