Managing for Results basis for work plan outlined by city administration

May 16, 2012 04:50 PM
Galesburg's City Council was presented with a one to five year working plan by administration at its most recent work session last Monday evening. The plan outlined 58 goals in 8 categories that council had identified last February as being important. Many of the goals listed had several projects or initiatives associated with it that would help to achieve the goal. This work session was the culmination of a year-long process that began in June, 2011.
To provide citizens with the most complete information about the council's goal-setting and budgeting process, the city's website will provide information and documents as the process goes forward. Some interactivity with citizens will be offered by polling citizens on their opinion on certain budget subjects. This area on the website should launch by May 18, 2012.
Garza stated during the work session, "These goals support long-term planning for the city which is an ongoing process. We are here to look for the greatest value that can be delivered to the customers and the people we represent." He went on to say, "It is important that we stay engaged and on track."
City Administrator Todd Thompson explained the process called Managing for Results which is the basis for the plan. "Managing for results is an ongoing and continuous cycle of identifying desired results, budgeting for results, delivering results, reporting on results, and then updating your plans and goals based on your experience. We are actively implementing this strategy. Over the past year the city has made significant progress on developing and implementing goals, and we will build on this during the development of the budget."
"At the end of the day, the council as a whole will weigh in and determine the direction they want to give city administration," Garza remarked. During the work session, Garza took few moments to express his appreciation to the city administration and staff for their significant effort on this Managing for Results process to date. Garza added, "The continuing substantial commitment by city council and administration to work together toward effectively accomplishing the priorities of our community is also appreciated."
The next budget work session will cover capital projects and is scheduled for July 9, 2012.
