The City of Galesburg’s newest firefighters recently graduated from the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) at the University of Illinois in Champaign. The 6-week Basic Operations Firefighter Academy is designed to offer firefighters a realistic, yet safe way to hone their skills.  Candidates have classroom time and physical agility training, but the majority of the Academy time is spent on actual hands on firefighting simulations. Chief Simkins is highly pleased with the accomplishments of TJ Scott and Zach Williams, as both received high reviews from the IFSI Academy staff. Graduation was held on Friday, April 17, 2015. Fire and Police Commissioner Naomi Law, Chief Tom Simkins, Battalion Chief Brad Stevenson and IFAA Union President Jeffery Maher made the trip to witness the ceremony. FF Scott and FF Williams have two additional weeks of classes highlighted by training in hazardous materials and they will report to shift duty during the first week of May.
