Weather permitting, the Galesburg Sanitary District is closing Madison Street from Main Street to North Street beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, July 6, 2020 to 5:00 p.m. on  Thursday, July 9, 2020 for sanitary sewer repair.  Road will be closed at 188 Madison and is open to local traffic only.

The safety campaign will run from June 15 through the early-morning hours of July 6 to encompass three summer weekends leading up to and after Independence Day. ​

Galesburg City Hall will re-open to the public on June 1, 2020. Upon re-opening to the public, City of Galesburg facilities will utilize increased protective measures, which include additional cleaning and sanitation of all touchpoints, use of social distancing stickers, and requiring all customer service staff and citizens entering City facilities to wear a face-covering.

The contractor that provides refuse service for the City of Galesburg, Waste Management, has canceled the City of Galesburg Spring Clean-up, previously scheduled for April 6 – 10, 2020. Henderson Street, are currently closed to public access.

The Galesburg Police Department has partnered with Nationwide Chaplain Services and 10-41 Incorporated to provide a wellness care program for police officers and dispatchers. The wellness program specializes in taking care of emergency responders who are exposed to both acute and cumulative stresses of dealing with graphic violence, tragedies involving children, and witnessing the onslaught of emotions that survivors and families of victims express during very trying times in their lives.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) requires every water supplier to develop and implement a comprehensive cross connection control (backflow) program for the elimination of existing cross connections and prevention or protection from all future cross connections. Citizens are reminded that an automatic parking prohibition will take effect on all city streets if snow accumulation reaches two inches. Cars parked on city streets at that time will be subject to ticketing and towing. The parking prohibition will remain in effect on all city streets until the street has been completely plowed. (The Central Business District is not included in this parking prohibition except for the NW corner of the public square).

Galesburg Fire Chief Tom Simkins announced he intends to retire, effective October 25, 2019, after leading the Galesburg Fire Department for the last 10 years. He began his career with the City of Galesburg in 1985 and has served as a Firefighter/EMT, Fire Captain, Battalion Chief, and Operations Chief of the Galesburg Fire Department. In addition, Chief Simkins has held the role of Knox County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator since 2009.

The City of Galesburg recently completed the required U.S. EPA water quality testing for lead for 2019. During this round of testing, the City had zero exceedances with the highest result being 7.4 ppb. The US EPA defines an exceedance as any result over 15 parts per billion. This year's results are very good with no test exceeding the action level.

The products are available to pick up during the facilities operating hours, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., seasonally. The facility operates mid-March through mid-November each year. Mulch and compost are provided on a self-serve basis and residents should bring their own shovel to load the material.

The deadline for a taxpayer to file a complaint to the Knox County Board of Review is Tuesday, January 29, 2019. The completed complaint form must be filed in one of the Assessor's offices no later than 4 P.M. The deadline for a taxpayer to file a complaint with the Knox County Board of Review is Monday, December 4, 2017. The completed complaint form must be filed in one of the Assessor's Offices no later than 4 p.m. If a taxpayer would like to file an appeal, he/she can get the appeal form and complaint procedures from the document section of the website or the Assessor's office.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) has provided the City of Galesburg with a $1,934,697 forgivable loan to assist homeowners in Galesburg with replacement of their lead water service lines. The project is slated to begin in July, and a groundbreaking ceremony has been planned for Saturday, June 24th to celebrate this step forward for Galesburg. While they are installing the new pipe, they plan to close Log City Trail between Fremont and South Lake Story Road on days they are working, during daytime work hours only. Citizens are reminded that an automatic parking prohibition will take effect on all city streets if snow accumulation reaches two inches. Cars parked on city streets at that time will be subject to ticketing and towing. The parking prohibition will remain in effect on all city streets until the street has been completely plowed. The deadline for a taxpayer to file a complaint to the Knox County Board of Review is December 23, 2016. The completed complaint form must be filed in one of the Assessor's Offices. If a taxpayer would like to file an appeal, he/she can get the appeal form and complaint procedures from the document section of the website or the Assessor's office.

Log City Trail is currently closed for repair by the Knox County Highway Department. They plan to open back up to traffic on Friday, July 1, 2016 for the 4th of July weekend. They will then apply a seal coat at some point during the week of July 4, 2016 following the holiday.

The City of Galesburg announced today its response to a story appearing in the Guardian, a UK-based newspaper, that included Galesburg in a list of 33 US cities it sampled that “violated EPA guidelines” for testing drinking water for lead in the last decade. The story falsely alleges that Galesburg was one of 21 cities that “instructed testers to pre-flush water pipes before testing for lead content against EPA guidance.”

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois State Police, and hundreds of local law enforcement agencies joined forces during the recent Click It or Ticket mobilization. The intensive campaign ran 24/7 from May 16-30, cracking down on seat belt law violators and impaired drivers in an effort to make Illinois roadways safer.

Construction on Pleasant Ave from Main to Water will begin on Monday, May 16, 2016 at 7:00 a.m. When this construction is completed (tentative date of Monday, May 23, 2016), Illinois Civil Contractors, Inc. plan to close Pleasant Avenue from Main to Water for reconstruction of the roadway. The City of Galesburg is committed to providing residents with a safe and reliable supply of drinking water, and continuously monitors the quality of the water. In 2015, the City of Galesburg found elevated levels of lead in drinking water in some homes/building, and therefore exceeded the lead action level by a narrow margin. Lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children.
