In anticipation of the City and the region moving to Phase 3 under the Restore Illinois Plan on May 29, 2020, which enables restaurants and bars to offer outdoor service, the City of Galesburg has established a temporary policy that clears away some of the regulatory hurdles to assist bars and restaurants with outdoor operation.

Galesburg Mayor John Pritchard is considering the City of Galesburg joining the Heart of Illinois Plan in an effort to more quickly navigate the re-opening phases outlined in the Governor’s Restore Illinois Plan. A copy of the Heart of Illinois Plan can be found on the City of Galesburg’s website for review.

Galesburg City Hall will re-open to the public on June 1, 2020. Upon re-opening to the public, City of Galesburg facilities will utilize increased protective measures, which include additional cleaning and sanitation of all touchpoints, use of social distancing stickers, and requiring all customer service staff and citizens entering City facilities to wear a face-covering.

In light of the recent extension of the State of Illinois stay at home order, City of Galesburg facilities, including Galesburg City Hall, will remain closed to the public through May 31, 2020. City employees will continue to be available via phone or email.

Galesburg citizens are typically able to drop off paint for recycling at Walmart, 659 Knox Square Drive, on the third Saturday of each month from May - September. The opening of this disposal option will be delayed this year, with the first event tentatively scheduled for the third Saturday in June. Drop off hours are 8 a.m - noon.

To protect patrons and prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, all City of Galesburg playgrounds, including the playground at Lombard Middle School, are closed until further notice. The Connie Nott Dog Park, tennis courts, and basketball courts are all also closed until further notice.

2020 exemption renewal deadline September 30, 2020. Due to increased health concerns, we ask that everyone wait to file the renewal application for six to eight weeks. We are concerned for the welfare of our seniors, the general public, as well as our staff. Most questions may be handled by phone. We are asking that you call 342-1106 rather than come to the office.

In 2019, the City of Galesburg initiated the 5 x 5 Housing Plan, which is a comprehensive approach to address the blighted housing conditions in Galesburg. An update on the 5 x 5 housing program has been released and the City is currently accepting applications for housing rehabilitation grants for low to moderate-income homes.

The City of Galesburg, Illinois was awarded a Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Help Eliminate Lead Program Grant in the fall of 2019. DCEO was awarded this funding from the federal agency, Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Grant monies are being used for Lead Hazard Remediation in low-to-moderate-income, privately-owned, owner-occupied and rental units throughout the community.
