Galesburg Police Department announced its plans for July Fourth traffic enforcement with a focus on impaired and unbuckled drivers. The safety campaign will run June 17 through July 6 to encompass three weekends leading up to and following the Independence Day holiday, one of the deadliest times on Illinois roads.

Effective today, Monday, June 14th, Brandt Construction has closed Michigan Avenue from Main Street to Grand Avenue for approximately 3 weeks for pavement patching.  Road will be open to local traffic only.

On Friday, June 11, 2021, the State of Illinois entered Phase 5 of the COVID-19 reopening plan. As the state enters the final phase of the plan, Illinois Restored, the Knox County COVID Unified Command Dashboard, which had been posted on the City's website as the official source of COVID-19 information for Knox County, is being archived. Residents can continue to access COVID-19 information through the Illinois Department of Public Health, and Knox County Health Department.

The Chief's Corner has been launched as a way for the Galesburg Police Chief to communicate and build relationships with citizens. This will be done through both online conversations on the Galesburg Police Department Facebook page and in-person meetings. The first in-person Chief's Corner is scheduled for June 11, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Hy-Vee, 2030 E. Main Street, Galesburg, in the Market Grill Dining Room.

The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire Wednesday evening, June 9th, at 670 S. Academy St. at 5:21 pm. The response included all three stations and 11 personnel on duty. Upon arrival at the multi-unit apartment building, light smoke could be seen coming from the roof. Battalion Chief Donald Brackett assumed command and the Central Station crew made entry and extinguished a kitchen fire. The City of Galesburg will soon be opening water features for the summer season. Opening on Saturday, May 29, 2021 - spray pads at Rotary and Kiwanis Park, and the beach swimming area and boat rentals at Lake Storey Park. Opening Tuesday, June 1, 2021 - wading pools at ON Custer Park, HT Custer Park, and Lincoln Park. Opening Friday, June 11, 2021 - Lakeside Water Park.

Weather permitting, Brandt Construction will be closing South Seminary Street from First Street to Second Street beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26 for roadway construction which will be closed for approximately four weeks.  They will also be closing a section from Fourth Street to the south Hi-Lo entrance for approximately two weeks.

Enrollment in the aggregation program is automatic and users only need to take action if they choose to opt-out of the program. The new agreement will take effect with the July 2021 meter read date and will be active through the July 2024 meter read date. The agreement will be for 100% renewable power at $0.05499 per kWh with Homefield Energy.

Mulch and compost are available to Galesburg residents free of charge at the oversized brush drop-off site, located at 636 Pickard Road, just west of Farm King on West Main Street. The products are available to pick up during the facilities operating hours, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., seasonally. Mulch and compost are provided on a self-serve basis and residents should bring their own shovel to load the material.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) recently tested the City of Galesburg water system for compounds known as Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) as part of a statewide study of community water supplies. The EPA samples tested for 18 PFAS. Of those 18, the City’s results only detected four PFAS, three of which were below the draft guidance level, and one which was above the draft guidance level.

The Galesburg Police Department (GPD) rolled out a new fleet of squad cars in the last quarter of 2020. As part of this, GPD initiated a new car and body-worn camera system (BWC). This new system incorporates both the in-car and body-worn cameras into one program. Every uniformed officer assigned to patrol duties has been issued, and will wear, a body-worn camera while on duty.

The City of Galesburg offers an Adopt-A-Park program to encourage community involvement and civic engagement while keeping city parks clean and well-maintained.
While Halloween celebrations may be different this year, many ghosts and ghouls will still be on the “haunt” for a frighteningly good time. The Galesburg Police Department today reminded motorists of the importance of planning for a sober ride home before the scares start and keeping watch for little goblins walking along roads after dark.
Preliminary Damage Assessments will be conducted by FEMA representatives.
