No disaster declaration for most recent flooding

June 20, 2013 04:38 PM
The Knox County Emergency Management Agency (KCEMA) learned there will be no State or Federal Declaration of Disaster for the severe weather and related flooding that occurred in Galesburg and Knox County during the week of May 28.  State officials informed KCEMA Coordinator Tom Simkins that even though the rainfall on May 28 caused significant flooding, especially in the Galesburg area, the weather event was not large enough to cause widespread damage outside the Knox County area.  Given the absence of a declared disaster at the federal level, there will be no public or individual assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the week of May 28.

Damage assessment information from approximately 70 individual households in Galesburg, as well as public damage assessments including those from Carl Sandburg College, was collected by KCEMA over the last two weeks and forwarded to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA).   Though Knox County met its threshold for public assistance, the state was far from meeting its required minimum threshold for disaster declaration.   There was also an insufficient impact on the community to gain a declaration for individual assistance.

The FEMA registration period for individual assistance for the severe weather of April 16 – May 5 is still open.  At this time, nearly 600 individuals have registered for individual assistance with over $1,000,000 released by FEMA in Knox County.   The April storm event impacted a large portion of Illinois with 33 counties on the disaster declaration list.  Registration with FEMA for this earlier event beginning in April continues through July 9.  Individuals can register online at or by phone at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).

Individuals with questions may call Knox County EMA at 309-345-3756.
