November 19, 2015 06:49 AM
Officer Phil Pieper was recognized at Monday evening’s Galesburg City Council meeting for his outstanding commitment to traffic safety, as the recipient of a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Award.
The award recognizes an officer displaying exemplary service during the Labor Day Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign, designed to save lives by strongly enforcing seat belt and impaired driving laws. During the campaign, Officer Pieper worked over 50 hours of overtime, made six DUI arrests and wrote 60+ tickets. Along with the DUI arrests, Officer Pieper made five criminal arrests, including a felony drug arrest. Officer Pieper was chosen as the recipient of this regional honor from a six state area.
"Officer Pieper’s outstanding efforts to keep our roadways safe are a credit to our department," stated Lt. Russell Idle. "It is an honor to have one of our Officers chosen out of a six state area to be recognized by the NHTSA."
Officer Pieper has served with the Galesburg Police Department since June 20, 2000, and will be attending DUI instructor school in December to become the departmental DUI instructor. In this capacity, Pieper will teach fellow officers the proper methods and procedures in conducting a DUI investigation.
