Recreational ground fires may resume in Galesburg

August 29, 2012 03:52 PM
Given the recent rains over the weekend, the Galesburg Fire Department will resume issuing permits for recreational fires on the ground in Galesburg. Citizens are reminded leaf-burning is prohibited inside Galesburg city limits. Only dry-seasoned wood is allowed to be burned.
A recreational fire on the ground requires a no-cost permit issued by the Fire Department. Fires cannot be larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height. A means of extinguishment must be available and the fire must be attended at all times. These fires are allowed for a maximum of 4 hours between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., Monday through Friday. No flammable liquid can be used to start or maintain the fire and must be a minimum of 25 feet away from any structure or other combustible object.
Recreational fires in either an outdoor fireplace or fire pit can be enjoyed without a permit being issued, provided a hose is available, the fire is 10 feet away from any structure, and is attended at all times.
For information regarding the city's burning policies or to obtain a permit for a ground fire, contact the department at 345-3756.
