Recycling and refuse programs available to residential customers

January 24, 2012 11:28 AM
The annual Recycling and Refuse Guide was mailed to every household in the city of Galesburg recently. The guide describes more than a dozen programs available for recycling and disposing of refuse. This guide can also be found on the city’s website.
Since printing the guide, there has been a change in the drop off location for recycling alkaline and rechargeable batteries. Galesburg residents wishing to avert alkaline and rechargeable battery waste from the landfill may drop them off at Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, located at 531 W. Carl Sandburg Drive. Walmart will no longer accept these batteries for recycling.
All recycling and refuse programs are paid with funds collected from residents' quarterly refuse bill. As such, curbside recycling and refuse pick up and all special recycling and refuse programs are available to Galesburg residential customers only unless otherwise specified in the guide. Participation in these programs by businesses and institutions is prohibited as they do not contribute toward the cost to run the programs.
